I got
a pro for this one. I had visions of doing it myself but as the summer ran into
fall I figured I'd
pay someone to get it done fast and not kill myself doing it over weekends and
evenings. I just helped a friend put on a roof so I was loaded up with knowledge
learned by his mistakes but still broke out the check book when the time came.
Another factor was I have a tall, 12 pitch roof which would really suck to fall
off of. As it turned out the guy who roofed it was a friend of my framers and
they often work together. The roofer borrows the framers Lull so the shingles
get up on the roof in minutes without any effort. All said and done he did an
excellent job and was done in a couple days.
We
went with architectural shingles (30 year) for the look. I think they give a
nice depth to the roof surface that three tab shingles don't. Make sure the
flashing is done correctly or you will have leaks for certain. In our New
England climate the roofer also put down that rubber ice dam membrane on the
lower portion of the roof. The attic space is vented using soffit vents and a
ridge vent along the ridge. If the days are hot avoid walking on the shingles
when they soften up in the sun. You can do some real damage to a nice new roof.
