Day 1
Our
framing job started out with a combination of demolition and framing. The goal
for the day was to get the old roof off and the second floor deck up. We
supported our second floor by spanning the entire width of the house with
16" TJI joists. This meant with the exception of the exterior walls, none of the
first floor walls are load bearing.
In
addition to going up, our first floor foot print increased. This increase was
within the perimeter of the original house but in the original house this space
was exterior slabs with the roof as an overhang. We decided to reclaim this
space as interior living space so these new walls had to be built first since
they would support the second floor.
Once
these lower walls and deck were built, the old roof and overhangs were ripped
off. Our framer owned a Lull which is an incredibly handy machine that makes all
phases of construction go faster. He used the Lull to rip off the old roof as
well as bring the lumber up to the second floor.
With
the old roof off (and no one fell through my ceiling) the TJI's were lifted into
place and sistered along side the old ceiling joists. Once they were in place,
the second floor decking was nailed on. Day one was over, no rain in sight and
everything went as planned.
